So, what is the TikTok profile banner?
If you have been on TikTok lately, you have probably seen the tutorials: someone's profile with a wide, beautiful image stretched behind their avatar and bio — like a YouTube channel banner, but on TikTok. Then the tutorial promises you can get the same look, if you just install a certain app. Before you do anything, read this page. Most of what those tutorials claim is half true at best, and the half they skip is the part that could cost you your account.
The profile banner itself is real. TikTok has been quietly rolling out a native profile banner feature — a wide background image on your profile, officially called "Change background" inside the app. It exists. It works. But here is the part the tutorials rush past: you cannot turn it on yourself. Access is controlled by an internal allow list, and the rollout is gradual. Most accounts simply do not have it yet, no matter how updated their app is.
Why is everyone talking about it right now?
Social media is flooded with "how to get TikTok banner" videos right now, and almost all of them point to the same thing: a modified TikTok APK that supposedly unlocks the banner. This is where you need to slow down. There is a kernel of truth buried in the claim — TikTok's banner button really is hidden behind an allow-list check, and that check can technically be bypassed — but the leap from "technically possible" to "safe to install this random APK" is enormous. Those mod APK claims carry real risks: malware hidden in unverified installers, account suspension when TikTok's automated systems detect a modified client, and stolen login credentials. We never link to mod APK downloads, and this site never will.
How to check if your account has banner access
The check takes ten seconds and needs nothing but the official app. Open your profile, tap Edit profile, and look for a "Change background" or banner option. If it is there, you are on the allow list and you can set your banner the official way right now. If it is not there, no APK, trick, or settings change will legitimately give it to you — your account just is not included yet. Keep your app updated, because allow-list waves tend to follow app updates, but do not chase it with sketchy downloads.
What everyone can do today: video covers
Here is the good news that the tutorials never mention: there is a fully official customization feature every single account already has. Video covers let you choose the thumbnail frame for each upload, add text, and shape how your profile grid looks — and they work for everyone, right now, with zero risk. A lot of the "banner" looks people want are actually achievable with a well-designed video cover and a clean profile layout. If your goal is a profile that stands out, start there instead of gambling on a mod.
Why does TikTok gate features like this?
It feels arbitrary when your friend has the banner and you do not, but there is a method to it. TikTok — like every major platform — rolls features out in stages: internal testing, small allow-list groups, wider waves, then everyone. Staged rollouts let them catch bugs, measure server load, and watch how a feature changes behavior before a billion people get it. The banner is simply somewhere in the middle of that pipeline. Understanding the mechanics makes the wait less mysterious — and makes it obvious why "install this APK" is not how legitimate features arrive.
Designing a banner worth showing
If you do have access — or when your account gets it — the difference between a banner that looks professional and one that looks slapped together comes down to a few basics: safe dimensions, keeping text and faces out of the cropped zones, and matching your brand colors. Our banner design guide walks through the dimensions that work, the common mistakes that make banners look broken, and how to make one for free with tools you already have.
The bottom line
The TikTok profile banner is real, but it is not something you unlock with a download — it is something TikTok grants to accounts over time. Everything you need to know is on this site: what the banner is, how to check your access, what to use instead while you wait, and how to design one when your turn comes. No mods, no risks, no nonsense.

Almost installed one of those banner APKs last week. Glad I found this first. The part about allow lists being server-side makes total sense — no app can change your account status.
Question for anyone who has the banner: does it show up on other people's screens the same way? I designed one but I only see my own profile on my phone, worried about the crop zones on different screen sizes.
Sofia — I have it, and yes, the sides crop differently on my tablet vs my phone. Keep everything important in the center like the design guide says and you'll be fine. My first banner had text near the edge and it got cut off on my friend's phone.
The banner vs video cover explanation should be required reading. I genuinely thought they were the same thing because the tutorials use the words interchangeably. Redid all my covers with matching colors and my profile looks 10x better already.
This finally cleared it up for me — I kept seeing banner tutorials and assumed I was doing something wrong. Checked Edit profile like the guide says and there's no Change background option, so I guess I'm just not in the wave yet. The video cover tip is genuinely useful though, already redid mine.
